Zahidi means “of a small quantity” or “nobility,” It was introduced around the 1900's and it originated in northern Iraq. Zahidi dates are a rarer type of date that are characteristically they are medium sized and distinctively oval in shape, a golden amber in color, when ripe, and an excellent shipper and keeper. It is classified as a semi-dry date. They have pale brown skin and a thick, golden inner flesh that surrounds a single seed. These dates are buttery, sweet, and chewy. The firm chewy texture of the Zahidi make it a perfect baking date for recipes that call for date pieces. As a semi-soft variety, it maintains its structural integrity it cookies, cakes and breads. Do try to make pickle with these dates if you love the sweet taste of dates in pickles. If you want the intense flavor of a caramel with the nutrients of a super-food, these are the dates for you. The semi-dry in texture, the Zahidi date has a mildly sweet, nutty and buttery flavor with a subtle tang reminiscent of dried apricots.
